The use of X-Ray diffraction in the routine analysis of clinkers and cements

The increase in the technical demand, as well as the reduction of the environmental impact in the production of clinker and cement make the controlling of manufacturing characteristics an important item. This component needs an application of high technology analytical techniques, with a detailed control of the characteristics over the raw materials used for the finished product.

Process control of X-ray fluorescence, with the most recent use of X-ray diffraction routinely allows the prediction and verification of various mechanical properties and fault models. This plays a key role in quality check laboratories of different cement industries. The role of techniques in the current context, together with their possibilities, is addressed in this lecture, focusing on the determination of major and minor elements via XRF and routines via Refinement by the Rietveld Method for XRD.

Mr. Leandro Almeida graduated Crystallography at Federal University of Minas Gerais. He has 11 years of experience in Geochemical Analysis Laboratories working with Fluorescence and X-Ray Diffraction.
